To compare Bangkok physio clinics for rehab after surgery, check six things: that your physiotherapist is licensed, that they'll follow your surgeon's protocol, that the plan has phases with clear milestones, that they have the equipment your stage needs, a session schedule you can keep, and a clear price. Ask every clinic the same questions, and the differences show up fast.

The 6 checks
1. Is your physiotherapist licensed?
In Thailand, only a physiotherapist licensed by the Physical Therapy Council may practise physiotherapy, under the Physical Therapy Practice Act B.E. 2547 (2004). Ask for your physiotherapist's full name and licence number. Post-surgery rehab should be led by a licensed physiotherapist, not a massage therapist or personal trainer.
2. Will the clinic follow your surgeon's protocol?
Your surgeon decides what you can and can't do in the first weeks: how much weight to put through the leg, how far to bend the knee, and which movements to avoid after a hip replacement. A good Bangkok rehab clinic asks for your operation notes and your surgeon's protocol before the first session, and gets in touch with the surgeon if something doesn't look right.
- Operation notesWhat was done, and the graft or implant used
- Weight-bearingHow much weight the leg can take, and when
- Movement limitsRange-of-motion limits and precautions
- Brace or aidsBrace settings, crutches, how long
- Review datesWhen you see the surgeon again
3. Is the plan phased, with milestones?
Rehab after major surgery moves through phases: protecting the repair, getting movement back, rebuilding strength, then returning to sport or full activity. Ask how the clinic decides when you move to the next phase. After ACL reconstruction, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) says return to sport typically takes 6–12 months and should depend on passing strength and function tests, not on time alone.
- Physio starts straight after surgery
- Return to sport depends on passing strength and function tests
- Not on time alone
- Daily activities in about 3–6 weeks (AAOS)
- Walking without aids after about 6 weeks (NHS)
- Full recovery can take several months or longer
- Light activities in about 3–6 weeks (AAOS)
- Movement precautions for about the first 6 weeks
- Full recovery takes several months (NHS)
4. Does the clinic have the equipment your stage needs?
Early rehab needs little more than a treatment table. Later stages need a gym. Some patients benefit from pool-based therapy, and testing strength with equipment shows whether the operated leg has caught up. In Bangkok in October 2026:
- Gym space: Form Recovery and Wellness has gym space and equipment at each branch.
- Strength testing: BPC Physio offers VALD strength testing (฿1,000).
- Hydrotherapy: Form Recovery and Wellness (aqua therapy), MedPark (two hydrotherapy pools), Vejthani and Bangkok Hospital.
- Robotic gait training: Vejthani, Bumrungrad and Bangkok Hospital, mainly for neurological rehab.
5. Can you keep up the session schedule?
There's no national standard for how many physio visits you need after surgery. Many published protocols combine supervised sessions, often two to three a week early on, with exercises at home every day. Ask how often the clinic expects to see you in each phase, and whether that fits your stay in Bangkok. If you're flying home, ask for a written home programme and a handover letter for a physiotherapist at home.
6. Is the price clear?
Post-surgery rehab runs for months, so the session price matters more than any single visit. Ask for the price per session, what a package includes, whether unused sessions are refundable, and whether a doctor's fee is added at hospitals.
How Bangkok providers compare for post-surgery rehab
| Provider | Published post-op programmes | Equipment | Published price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Form Recovery and Wellness | ACL (6 phases), knee replacement (5 phases), hip replacement (5 phases) | Gym space at each branch; aqua therapy | ฿2,100 per 60-min session; programmes not priced |
| BPC Physio | ACL Rehab Course | VALD strength testing | ฿3,300 first ACL assessment (105 min); ฿2,000 per 60-min session |
| Vejthani Hospital | Post-op knee and knee-replacement physio; JCI clinical care certification for knee replacement | Hydrotherapy, Lokomat, C-Mill | Not published |
| MedPark Hospital | Post-operative and sports-injury rehab | Two hydrotherapy pools | Not published |
| Bumrungrad International Hospital | Pre- and post-operative rehab | Robotic gait training, C-Mill, Redcord | Not published |
Form Recovery and Wellness leads this table because it publishes the most detail on its post-surgery rehab. Separate programmes for ACL reconstruction, knee replacement and hip replacement each set out the phases, the goals of each phase and how often you attend. All its practitioners speak English, and each branch has gym space for the strengthening phases.
Worth knowing: Form Recovery and Wellness doesn't publish a price for its post-surgery programmes, so ask for the expected number of sessions in writing after your assessment. It's a clinic, not a hospital, so if your surgery was complex or you have other medical conditions, discuss with your surgeon whether hospital-based rehab suits you better.
For patients who want hard numbers on strength, BPC Physio's VALD testing is a useful add-on during ACL rehab. For knee replacement with pool-based or robotic therapy, Vejthani Hospital has the most equipment.
Questions to ask every rehab clinic
- Is my physiotherapist licensed by the Physical Therapy Council? What is their licence number?
- Will you follow my surgeon's protocol, and will you contact my surgeon if needed?
- What are the phases of my rehab, and how do you decide when I move on?
- How often will I need to come in each phase, and what do I do at home?
- Will I see the same physiotherapist each time?
- What is the price per session, and are packages refundable if I leave Bangkok early?

FAQ
How long is physiotherapy after ACL surgery?
Physiotherapy after ACL reconstruction starts straight after surgery and usually runs for many months. The AAOS says return to sport typically takes 6–12 months, and should depend on passing strength and function tests rather than on time alone.
How long does it take to recover from a knee replacement?
The AAOS says most people return to daily activities within 3–6 weeks of a total knee replacement. The NHS says you may walk without aids after about 6 weeks, and that full recovery can take several months or longer. Your surgeon and physiotherapist will set your own timeline.
How long is rehab after a hip replacement?
The AAOS says most people return to light activities within 3–6 weeks of a total hip replacement, with movement precautions for the first 6 weeks or so. The NHS says full recovery takes several months. Follow your surgeon's precautions closely in the early weeks.
How often should I have physio after surgery?
There's no fixed national standard. Many protocols combine supervised sessions, often two to three a week in the early phases, with daily exercises at home, then reduce visits as you progress. Ask your surgeon and physiotherapist what suits your operation.
Can I start rehab in Bangkok and continue at home?
Yes. Many patients start rehab in Bangkok and continue at home. Ask your Bangkok physiotherapist for a written home programme, a summary of your progress and the next milestones, so a physiotherapist at home can pick up where they left off.
